As a brief followup to my post about the merits of keeping a gratitude journal, this week I’d like to present a list of 25 things I’m grateful for. I hope this helps inspire you to put together your own list.
Here, in no particular order, are some of the people, places, things, and organizations for which I am grateful.
1. A wife who loves me unconditionally, even when I might not deserve it, and is always there for me.
2. That I took the time to have baseball and football catches with my two sons, and played countless games and read dozens of books to them, while I had the opportunity.
3. Expecting my first grandchild in July!
4. A home, food on the table, and clothes to wear. Too often we take these essentials for granted.
5. My friends, some of whom I have known for decades.
6. The village we have lived in for nearly 40 years, Massapequa Park, N.Y., and the Long Island area in general.
7. Sunny days. I know we need rain, and cloudy days are part of the weather cycle. But clear, sunny days often brighten my mood.
8. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Sometimes the colors of the sky in the morning and evening are just breathtaking.
9. Rainbows. A bright rainbow that arches across the sky is mesmerizing.
10. Getting a good night’s sleep.
11. Enjoying family traditions throughout the year, especially during the holidays. For example, around New Year’s Day we create lists of highlights of the previous year and goals for the new one.
12. The healthcare workers and medicines that help me to maintain good health.
13. Reading good books, and reading in general.
14. Readers of this blog, and of my memoir book, Life Lessons.
15. Enjoying a good laugh with family and/or friends.
16. Watching a great movie, especially at a theater. For example, I remember seeing “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at a big-screen theater when it first came out.
17. The opportunity I’ve had to travel to many places, including 41 states. It’s a wonderful world and I hope to see more of it.
18. Learning new skills, such as how to self-publish a book and take part in podcasts.
19. The beauty of nature that is all around us.
20. The feeling of being at peace, thoroughly relaxed and enjoying the moment.
21. A successful career as a business and technology writer—now nearing its close—and all the people who have helped make it possible.
22. Extended family members. There are many across the country and beyond.
23. All of the loved ones no longer with us who have been an important part of my life.
24. My faith in God, which has sometimes waivered but is always there. It’s part of who I am.
25. The fact that we have been born and are living on this planet, against all odds.
