I’ve been meaning to write a post about movies that are particularly inspirational, and with the Academy Awards coming up this seems like an appropriate time to acknowledge these films.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but the following 25 movies (in alphabetical order) are some I’ve found to be especially uplifting, motivating or thought provoking. Many have themes of positivity and gratitude. I’ve included a YouTube trailer with each one.
Breaking Away (1979)
I remember watching this movie in a theater with friends while I was a student at the University of Maryland. It’s a great underdog story focused on four working-class friends who’ve recently graduated from high school and aren’t sure what to do with their lives.
Casablanca (1942)
A classic and one of my favorites. Among the main themes are loyalty and a willingness to make personal sacrifices for the greater good. In standing up to evil, everyone can make a difference. The film takes place during World War II, and one of the most moving aspects of it are that many of the actors were refugees who had fled Nazi-occupied Europe.
Cast Away (2000)
Lessons from this movie include perseverance, physical and emotional survival under the most difficult circumstances, and the potential for transformation and exploring new possibilities in life.
CODA (2021)
CODA (child of deaf adults) is a story about pursuing a dream despite difficult obstacles. Positive themes include the love of family, empathy for others, and the need for hope.
Field of Dreams (1989)
This is one of my favorite baseball movies, but ultimately it’s about much more than the game. I’m not ashamed to admit that one scene toward the end invariably brings tears to my eyes. And this film shows us that hearing voices and being illogical can sometimes be a good thing.
Finding Nemo (2003)
One of the many great animated films from Pixar, Finding Nemo covers themes including the importance of friendship, teamwork and perseverance in overcoming challenges. It shows us why we should embrace the world instead of living in fear.
Forrest Gump (1994)
This movie has several inspirational messages: No matter what life gives you, make the most of it; take risks and pursue your passions; don’t take yourself too seriously; anyone can have valuable insights and wisdom to share; stay optimistic and appreciate life.
The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
Based on the classic book of the same name, this film is filled with inspiring messages. These include overcoming disappointment, false promises and loss; the importance of being resilient; and the constant need to embrace hope even when things might seem hopeless.
Hidden Figures (2016)
Being a space aficionado, any movie that involves NASA and space travel is likely to be appealing to me. This one takes a fascinating view of three women who overcame gender and racial barriers to help make possible one of the greatest operations in U.S. history.
High Noon (1952)
Another Hollywood classic, this movie covers themes such as courage, integrity, facing up to fears and holding on to principles in the face of overwhelming odds.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Excellent war-time movie about sticking to one’s beliefs even when encountering significant roadblocks. We mustn’t let fear or uncertainty keep us from taking necessary risks or living life in the moment.
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Another one of my all-time favorites. What’s astounding is that it didn’t do well at the box office and wasn’t a critical success when first released. Despite its dark moments, I think this is one of the most uplifting films ever made, reminding us that our lives are valuable.
The Karate Kid (1984)
This was a very popular movie when it came out, and it’s endearing on multiple levels. Lots of good lessons, including the importance of commitment, respect for others, facing up to fears, and finding balance in life.
The King’s Speech (2010)
Even a king can have a physical or emotional disorder—in this case stuttering—that gets in the way of doing his job. This story is about how he learns to trust his tutor and works hard to overcome this challenge.
Life of Pi (2012)
Lessons include the importance of forgiveness and taking things in stride, not giving up and fighting to survive despite harsh conditions, and relying on faith, instinct and strength of will.
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939)
Even though this movie came out 85 years ago, the messages are still relevant: decency and honesty—in politics or anywhere else for that matter—are important. Also, a single person can make a difference.
October Sky (1999)
Another space-related movie, this time about a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry, against his father’s wishes. With the right amount determination, and help from friends, we can try to realize our dreams.
On Golden Pond (1981)
Heartfelt, emotional movie featuring some great actors at their best. Among the main themes are the strength of marriage, facing mortality, and repairing long-strained relationships before it’s too late. Idyllic setting is part of the charm.
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
This movie shows how working hard and taking advantage of opportunities can result in success and prosperity. Another theme is building strong families through commitment, love and trust.
The Right Stuff (1983)
Yes, another space-themed movie. This one, about the early years of America’s space program, is a lesson in dealing with dangers, frustrations and personal crises—and soaring to great heights.
Rocky (1976)
This might be the ultimate underdog story in the movies. And the tale is chock full of life lessons. One is to never give up; it’s our resilience in the face of challenges that defines us. Perseverance and determination can help us achieve our goals. Also, a great theme song.
Schindler’s List (1993)
A powerful film about the Holocaust that highlights the triumph of good over unspeakable evil. Lessons of unbroken spirit in the face of extreme hardships, and the enormous difference one individual can make.
Seabiscuit (2003)
This movie is based on one of my favorite books. Among the main messages: never give up on your dreams, no matter what barriers are in the way. Where there’s a will, there’s a way to succeed. Hard work and persistence can overcome barriers.
12 Angry Men (1957)
This is a remarkable film. It takes place mostly in a single room and relies heavily on the dialog and interaction among the 12 jurors deciding the fate of a young man. It shows that even when the odds are heavily against us, we must stick to our principles.
Toy Story 3 (2010)
I think all the Toy Story movies are great, but the third installment is my favorite. Themes include love, friendship, faith, positivity, loyalty and helping those in need. Of course, if you haven’t seen the first two Toy Story movies, watch them first!
“Every time I go to a movie, it’s magic, no matter what the movie’s about.”—Steven Spielberg
